Non-fungicidal control strategies for Phytophthora cinnamomi root rot of avocado

چکیده

While fungicides may be a major mechanism for control of avocado root rot, integrated management requires several other non-fungicidal approaches which are used together to maximize root rot control. Non-fungicidal methods of control include planting clean avocado nursery stock, selecting low hazard sites, planting on mounds in more hazardous sites, preventing the introduction of P. cinnamomi, using resistant rootstocks, preventing overor under-irrigation, treating with gypsum and the addition organic mulches. It appears that avocados can survive and grow in the presence of P. cinnamomi if this management scheme is practiced.

Effects of Gypsum Soil Amendments on Avocado Growth, Soil Drainage, and Resistance to Phytophthora cinnamomi

Phytophthora root rot of avocado, a soilborne disease caused by Phytophthora cinnamomi Rands, continues to be devastating to the cultivation of avocados despite more than 70 years of research on control methods. Phytophthora root rot has been estimated to be present in two-thirds of the avocado groves in California, causing losses of almost 30% of the total value of the crop (5). P. cinnamomi m...

De Novo Sequencing, Assembly, and Analysis of the Root Transcriptome of Persea americana (Mill.) in Response to Phytophthora cinnamomi and Flooding

Avocado is a diploid angiosperm containing 24 chromosomes with a genome estimated to be around 920 Mb. It is an important fruit crop worldwide but is susceptible to a root rot caused by the ubiquitous oomycete Phytophthora cinnamomi. Phytophthora root rot (PRR) causes damage to the feeder roots of trees, causing necrosis. This leads to branch-dieback and eventual tree death, resulting in severe...

Microsatellite markers reveal low breeding system efficacy and pollen contamination can limit production of full-sib avocado progeny

Phytophthora cinnamomi causes a severe root rot in avocado, Persea americana. Breeding tolerant rootstocks is thought to be the most promising method for phytophthora root rot disease control but breeding avocado is challenging. The avocado flowering syndrome (synchronous protogynous dichogamy), combined with high flowering and low fruit set, render controlled pollination exceedingly difficult....

Phylogenetic and expression analysis of the NPR1-like gene family from Persea americana (Mill.)

The NONEXPRESSOR OF PATHOGENESIS-RELATED GENES1 (NPR1) forms an integral part of the salicylic acid (SA) pathway in plants and is involved in cross-talk between the SA and jasmonic acid/ethylene (JA/ET) pathways. Therefore, NPR1 is essential to the effective response of plants to pathogens. Avocado (Persea americana) is a commercially important crop worldwide. Significant losses in production r...

Existence of Phytophthora Cinnamomi as Chlamydospores and Oospores in Roots and Soil

Persistence of the avocado root-rot fungus Phytophthora cinnamami Rands in soil for 6 years without a living host was reported by Zentmyer and Mircetich (8). The authors suggested that the fungus may survive in dead avocado roots as inactive mycelia, chlamydospores or oospores. Blackwell (1) considers chlamydospores of Phytophthora spp. to be resistant structures which allow these fungi to pers...
